A 10-month-old baby, Aalin Sherin Abraham, became the youngest organ donor in Kerala after she was  declared brain-dead on Friday. Her donated organs will help save four lives.

The baby was seriously injured in a road accident on February 5 near Pallam-Borma Junction on MC road. She was travelling with her mother and grandparents when their car hit another vehicle. She was first taken to hospital in Changanassery and Thriuvalla, later shifted to Amrita Hospital in Kochi for special treatment, but could not save her.

After doctors declared her brain-dead, her parents agreed to donate her organs. Veena George, Kerala’s health minister, said in a social media post that the baby would be remembered as the youngest organ donor in the state.

The organ donation was managed by the Kerala state organ and tissue transplant organisation. Officials said the baby’s heart valves will go to Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Science and Technology, the liver to KIMS hospital, and the kidneys to Government Medical College Thiruvananthapuram. Her eyes will be donated to the eye bank at Amrit Hospital.

Her parents are from Mallappally in Pathanamthitta district. Officials said their decision to donate organs has given new life to other patients and inspired many people.
