Thane Citizens vs. Tech Giant: Locals Protest Against Proposed Data Center

A quiet Saturday morning turned into a site of localized resistance as hundreds of Thane residents formed a massive human chain outside the proposed Data Center at Balkum as per reports. Organised by the citizen-led group ‘Wake Up Thanekar,’ the silent protest took place between 10.30 am and 12.00 pm on July 18, 2026, drawing community members from Balkum, Kolshet, and Dhokali to voice their stark opposition to the hyperscale project.

Standing outside the former plot of the renowned Colorchem company on the old Balkum-Bhiwandi-Agra Road, protesters held placards, delivered impassioned speeches, and performed traditional bharud (folk art) songs to highlight the environmental risks facing their neighborhood.

Demands and Citizens Concerns

The core of the unrest centers on the massive scale of the 53-acre facility. According to the citizen collective, the data center’s 24/7 cooling and server operations pose severe threats to the local ecosystem and infrastructure:

Severe Resource Strain: Protesters allege the hyperscale facility will consume an estimated 12 million liters of water daily, threatening an already fragile local supply, alongside drawing massive electricity grids.
Noise and Heat Pollution: Residents expressed deep anxieties over continuous noise levels projected to touch 90 decibels from cooling fans. They also warned of a potential localized temperature hike, a "heat island" effect right next to their homes.
Encroachment on Residential Hubs: Organizers emphasized that the industrial-scale project sits within a 1-kilometer radius of over eight major residential complexes, five schools, and three hospitals.
Rampant Tree-Felling: Activists have lodged active complaints regarding the clearing of green cover at the former Colorchem plot, demanding a full inquiry by the local tree authority.

Official Responses and Corporate Counterclaims

In response to the mounting public backlash, the private entity reportedly released a statement clarifying its operations, asserting that the project fully complies with all regulatory and environmental norms.

The company reportedly stated that all tree removal on the property followed official Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) approvals, and that a native replanting program is already underway to offset the lost green cover.

The ongoing friction has caught the attention of local authorities. Thane Member of Parliament (MP) Naresh Mhaske previously requested a complete suspension of the construction work to defuse tensions. Following the initial pushback, TMC Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao reportedly hosted a preliminary dialogue between a delegation from Wake Up Thanekar and representatives of the company. A formal joint meeting has been scheduled to facilitate direct dialogue and find a resolution.
