Tension erupts in Mira Road housing complex over Bakrid goat shed dispute

A dispute over goats kept inside a residential housing society ahead of Bakrid reportedly triggered high tension, protests, and clashes in Mumbai’s Mira Road area late on Sunday, prompting heavy police deployment in the locality.
As per local reports, the controversy unfolded at the Srishti Complex in Poonam Cluster-1 near Mira Road on Sunday.
Residents and members of local Hindu groups allegedly objected to a temporary structure being set up within the housing society premises to accommodate goats ahead of Eid al-Adha celebrations.
Following protests during the day, the temporary shed was reportedly removed.
However, tensions escalated later after members of the Muslim community allegedly gathered in protest and a complaint was reportedly lodged at Kashimira Police Station.
Police personnel were deployed to the area to prevent further escalation and attempted to mediate between the groups.
Despite the intervention, the situation reportedly flared up again late at night, leading to a scuffle at the site.
According to reports, locals cited directives of the Bombay High Court relating to restrictions on animal sacrifice in residential areas without prior permission.
Social activist and journalist Siraj Noorani claimed in a post on X that the dispute centred around a temporary shed allegedly constructed by members of the Muslim community to keep sacrificial goats inside the society premises.
He alleged that local Hindu organisations and some residents objected to the structure, following which a municipal team demolished it.

Noorani further claimed that attempts to rebuild the shed later at night led to another confrontation after activists from Hindu organisations gathered at the spot.
Police officials have not yet confirmed whether any arrests were made in connection with the incident.
Security remained deployed in the area as a precautionary measure, officials said.
This comes after Islamic scholars and Muslim leaders, on Sunday, held a meeting with NGOs, lawyers, social activists, political party leaders and others to ensure administrative preparedness and peaceful celebrations of the upcoming 'Bakrid' festival.
The festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide is expected to be celebrated on May 27 in India, depending on the sighting of the Moon.
