One Student Dead, 10 Injured After Tree Collapses on School Bus In Mumbai

An 11-year-old male student was killed and 10 others were injured after a massive tree collapsed onto a school bus in Mumbai’s Chembur area on Tuesday. The incident occurred amid heavy rain and strong winds, triggering a large-scale rescue operation and raising concerns over civic negligence.

Tree Falls On School Bus

According to reports, the yellow school bus was stationary under a large tree in Chembur with 13 students on board when the tree suddenly uprooted and crashed onto the vehicle.

Officials believe the decades-old tree’s roots may have weakened due to continuous rainfall, causing it to collapse.

Rescue Operation Launched

Local residents and passersby rushed to help before emergency teams, including the Mumbai Police, Fire Brigade and disaster management personnel, reached the spot.

As the tree was too large to be removed manually, rescue teams used specialised cutting equipment to cut through the branches and trunk before safely rescuing the trapped children.

One Student Dies, 10 Under Treatment

Of the 13 students on board, 10 sustained serious injuries and are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

Political leader Rahul Shewale confirmed that one female student succumbed to her injuries.

Questions Raised Over Civic Negligence

The incident has sparked criticism over the maintenance of old trees before the monsoon.

Former Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar called for strict action against the Garden Superintendent of the concerned zone. She said heavy branches and old trees should be inspected and trimmed before the monsoon to prevent such accidents.

Investigation Ordered

A senior official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said a detailed investigation will determine whether the tree had been identified as dangerous and whether there was any negligence in pre-monsoon tree trimming.

School Expresses Condolences

The school administration expressed grief over the student’s death and extended condolences to the bereaved family. It said its immediate priority is the treatment of the injured students at Zen Hospital, providing counselling support to the children on board, and cooperating with authorities during the investigation.
