One dead, 10 injured after they fall in open pit at Mumbai construction site

A late-night accident in Mumbai’s Bhandup area has left one person dead and 10 injured after they fell into an open pit at an under-construction site near Metro Mall. The incident happened around 11.30 pm on April 23.   

A group of people were walking near the site, close to a marriage hall, when they accidentally fell into a deep, uncovered pit at SRA (Slum Rehabilitation Authority) project, the Mumbai Fire Brigade said. 

Agencies, including the fire brigade, police, ambulance services, and local staff, were involved in rescuing  the injured. The victims were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Of the 11 injured, a 25-year-old man named Bhalchandra Falle was declared dead at the hospital. Two people continue to be in hospital. Their condition is said to be stable, while the remaining eight were discharged.

Officials said that an investigation will be conducted to find out the cause of the accident and if proper safety measures were taken at the construction site.
