Maharashtra’s Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that new vehicles will not be registered unless buyers provide proof of an allotted parking space from the relevant civic body, on Monday, as per reports.

The decision is part of a broader effort to address the growing parking crisis and worsening traffic congestion in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The announcement was made following a high-level meeting on the state’s upcoming Unified Parking Policy, which aims to streamline and regulate parking across cities in the region.

“We are looking to construct more parking spaces. Development rules must be followed, and developers must provide parking with residential units. We will not register new vehicles if the buyer doesn’t present a certificate of parking space allotment from the concerned civic body,” said Minister Sarnaik.

The meeting was held at Mantralaya and included participation from senior officials such as Additional Chief Secretary (Transport) Sanjay Sethi, Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar, and municipal commissioners under the MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority).

Officials expressed concern over unauthorised parking and increasing road congestion in major cities across the state. In response, the Transport Department is preparing to introduce the Unified Parking Policy.

Additionally, the government will implement strict enforcement measures – with help from the police and the Motor Vehicles Department – to remove unauthorised roadside parking. Long-abandoned vehicles will be immediately towed to free up space.

Civic bodies have also been encouraged to build dedicated parking plazas on land reserved for development and public utilities.
