A woman in Mumbai has accused a traffic police constable of threatening her with a fine of ₹14,000 after she refused to make an unofficial payment. The incident started a debate online after Mumbai Police responded to her claims.

The woman shared her experience on social media platform X. She said a woman traffic officer stopped her and warned that she could face a fine of ₹14,000 and that her vehicle might be seized.

The woman claimed the officer suggested other ways to ‘settle’ the matter instead of issuing a formal challan. According to the woman, she refused to pay any unofficial amount and asked the officer to follow the legal process. She said she received a challan of only ₹500 and questioned why the officer had mentioned a much higher fine.

After her post became popular online, Mumbai Police first asked her to provide details of the location where the incident happened. Mumbai Police said that the woman already had pending e-challans worth ₹3,900. They said the traffic constable informed her about these unpaid fines and also issued a new challan of ₹500 because she was not carrying her driving licence. According to the police, her total pending amount became ₹4,400.

However, the woman continued to question the officer's behaviour. She said the main issue was not the challan amount but the alleged threats and intimidation. She asked what action would be taken against the constable if the officer had wrongly mentioned heavy fines and vehicle seizure.

The incident has led to mixed reactions online. Some users supported the woman and shared similar experiences with traffic police, while others said that her pending challans should also be considered when discussing the case.
