Mumbai to Konkan travel is set to become faster and more convenient as a new roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry service will begin operations from September 1.
The service will connect Mumbai to Jaigarh in Ratnagiri in just 3–4 hours and Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg in about 5–6 hours, cutting the long, exhausting road journey by almost half.
Shipping Minister Nitesh Rane, who recently inspected the ferry, described it as “a matter of pride for Konkan.” The service was originally planned to launch before Ganesh Chaturthi but was delayed due to bad weather.
With conditions now improving, the ferry will commence operations after a five-day test run and will depart daily at 6:30 am from Bhaucha Dhakka Terminal in Mumbai.
The Ro-Ro ferry is designed to carry both passengers and vehicles, making onward travel in Konkan seamless. It can accommodate 50 four-wheelers and 30 two-wheelers at a time.
Four ticket classes will be available—
- Economy Class: ₹2,500 per person
- Premium Economy: ₹4,000 per person
- Business Class: ₹7,500 per person
- First Class: ₹9,000 per person
Vehicle charges are ₹6,000 per car, ₹1,000 per two-wheeler, and ₹600 per bicycle.
The new service follows the success of the Mumbai-Mandwa Ro-Ro ferry, launched in March 2020, and plans are underway to expand connectivity to other Konkan destinations like Shrivardhan and Mandwa in the near future.
