Mumbai plans 3-km underground walkway network linking Metro line 3 to key hubs

Mumbai is set to enhance last-mile connectivity with plans to build an extensive underground pedestrian network connected to the Mumbai Metro Line 3, according to a report by Mid-Day.
The proposed tunnels will link Metro stations to major commercial and public landmarks such as the Bandra Kurla Complex, Nehru Planetarium, and the Worli seafront promenade. Authorities have begun the process of appointing design and project management consultants for the project.
The underground corridors, expected to span nearly three kilometres, will reportedly include dedicated vestibules connecting stations like Science Centre and BKC directly to nearby buildings. The initiative aims to significantly improve commuter convenience and ease of movement across busy city zones.
Officials have also highlighted the potential to integrate organised hawker markets within these tunnels in coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This could enhance safety, boost late-night usability, and support local livelihoods.
Additionally, plans suggest extending underground connectivity to bridge key transit gaps, including a possible link between Dadar Metro station and the suburban railway network.
Under the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) framework, developers will be allowed an additional Floor Space Index (FSI) of up to 100% by paying a premium. In return, they must construct underground pedestrian links connecting their buildings directly to Metro entry points at their own cost.
