Flight operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai, will be suspended for six hours on May 7 as both its runways undergo scheduled pre-monsoon maintenance.

The runways, designated 09/27 and 14/32, will remain closed from 11 am to 5 pm on the day, temporarily impacting flight schedules at one of the country’s busiest airports.

Operator Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), owned by the Adani Group, said the annual maintenance exercise is essential to ensure the safety and durability of the airport’s airside infrastructure spread across 1,033 acres.

The work will involve detailed inspection of runway surfaces to assess wear and tear, along with preventive measures aimed at ensuring safe take-offs and landings during the monsoon season.

“CSMIA also leverages modern machinery and exhaustive planning to monitor the entire maintenance process, ensuring timely execution within the designated six-hour window,” the release said.

The airport operator added that coordination with airlines and other stakeholders had begun six months in advance to allow for rescheduling of flights and minimise disruption.

Passengers travelling on May 7 have been advised to check with their respective airlines for updated flight timings and plan their journeys accordingly.

The maintenance forms part of the airport’s annual monsoon preparedness programme, which includes routine inspections and preventive measures to address seasonal challenges.

CSMIA, among the busiest single-runway airports globally, handles over 950 air traffic movements daily. Similar maintenance work was carried out in November last year as part of routine safety measures, the release added.
