Planning a road trip from Mumbai to Goa? The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) is set to launch India's first-ever car ferry train service around the time of Ganesh Chaturthi (August-September).

This will help transport private cars along with their owners between Kolad in Maharashtra and Verna in Goa.

As per reports, travellers can now load their private vehicles onto the train and travel in attached passenger coaches, completing the journey in just 12 hours, significantly faster than the usual 20–22 hours by road, which is often delayed by traffic congestion and winding ghat roads.

The launch is expected ahead of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, offering a quicker alternative to the chaotic road journey.

Ferry train model

  • The vehicles will be tightly belted, with handbrakes applied during transit.
  • Each train will have 20 specially built wagons, with each wagon accommodating two cars, allowing for a total of 40 cars per trip, as per reports.
  • No passenger will be allowed to sit inside the cars during the journey, just like the sea-ferry rides.

Car transport charges

One-way vehicle transport cost is ₹7,875 with up to three passengers per vehicle allowed, as per reports.

Seating allocation

  • Two passengers can travel in a 3AC coach.
  • One passenger will be accommodated in the SLR (seating-cum-luggage rake) coach.

Fare options

  • Second Seating (2S): ₹190 per person.
  • 3AC Coach: ₹935 per person.

Train schedule

  • Departure: 5 pm from Kolad.
  • Arrival: 5 am at Verna (next day).
