Heavy rainfall continued to batter several parts of Maharashtra on Thursday, causing widespread waterlogging in Mumbai, Thane, Bhiwandi and the Vasai-Virar region. Flooded roads disrupted traffic, while several rain-related incidents were reported from different districts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more heavy rainfall over the next five days in Mumbai and nearby districts.
Long Traffic Jam on Mumbai-Nashik Highway
Commuters faced major delays on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway after rainwater filled potholes and ongoing roadwork slowed the movement of vehicles in Bhiwandi.
The traffic jam stretched for nearly 8 kilometres, with trucks, buses and private vehicles remaining stuck for around two to three hours.
Meanwhile, authorities also expressed concern over possible flooding in low-lying areas of Mumbai as a high tide was expected on Thursday afternoon.

Cars Swept Away, One Killed in Panvel
In Vasai’s Vaghral Pada area, two cars were swept away by a strong flow of water coming down from nearby hills. One driver managed to escape by jumping out of the vehicle before it was carried away.
In another incident in Panvel, a 45-year-old man lost his life after the roof slab of a bedroom collapsed inside a residential building. His 12-year-old daughter suffered serious injuries in the accident.

Tree Fall and Electrical Hazards Reported
Heavy rain also led to several other incidents across the state.
In Jogeshwari West, a large tree fell onto a road, damaging a tempo and an electricity meter box.
In Bhiwandi, a high-voltage power line snapped after a reported short circuit and fell onto a waterlogged road on the Tembhavali-Kharbav route. No major casualties were reported.
In Ulhasnagar’s Jijamata Colony, floodwater entered residential areas, with water levels rising up to waist height and damaging several houses.
IMD Warns of More Rain
The IMD has issued a five-day heavy rainfall alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.
The administration has advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged areas and remain cautious around electricity poles and damaged power lines as heavy rain is expected to continue.
