Heavy Rain Lashes Mumbai, Submerges Kurla Tracks as Yellow Alert Issued on Ganesh Chaturthi

Continuous heavy rainfall since Saturday night has severely disrupted normal life across Mumbai and its neighbouring metropolitan areas, inundating suburban rail tracks, submerging key arterial roads and causing acute distress to morning commuters.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert on Sunday for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, warning of ongoing thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rain, and strong winds blowing at 40-50 kmph at isolated locations.

Commute Hit Across Suburbs and Rail Network

Overnight downpours hit the Vasai-Virar belt hard. Heavy waterlogging locked down the eastern side of Nalasopara Railway Station, leaving passengers with no option but to wade through knee-deep water. Massive crowds packed the station halls as people struggled to reach their destinations.

Motorists and pedestrians navigating Nalasopara faced severe delays, with arterial stretches around Centre Park and Tulinj Bridge completely submerged.

Further south, heavy spells lashed the Dadar locality, triggering major delays for road commuters. Railway infrastructure also took a hit as tracks at Kurla station were flooded following relentless rain, hampering overall movement in and around the key suburban transit hub.

Festive Plans Shadowed by Met Forecast

The cloudburst arrives on the opening day of the city’s landmark Ganesh festival. "The sky will generally remain cloudy with occasional moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by lightning and strong winds of 40-50 kmph. Isolated areas may also experience isolated heavy rain," said the weather department.

Meteorologists indicate that prevailing conditions will sustain continuous rain activity over Mumbai and adjoining districts through Monday. Light to moderate rainfall is also forecast for Tuesday, when the first round of idol immersion processions is slated to begin across the city.
