Fire Breaks Out At Mumbai Commercial Building, 11 Rescued From Kandivali Lodging House

A fire broke out at a commercial building on Kandiwali Station Road in Mumbai’s Kandivali West in the early hours of Monday, prompting a swift rescue operation in which 11 people were brought to safety from a lodging house on the second floor.

The incident was reported to the Mumbai Fire Brigade at around 4:14 am. The blaze broke out at Abhirai Hotel and was classified as a Level-I fire by the civic fire authorities.

11 rescued as building fills with smoke

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mumbai Fire Brigade, firefighters rescued all 11 people from the second-floor lodging house using the staircase.

The entire commercial building, which has a basement, ground floor and four upper floors, was smoke-logged during the incident. No injuries were reported.

Fire damages electrical installations, furniture

The fire brigade said the blaze affected electrical wiring and installations, wooden furniture, tarpaulin, bamboo and plastic materials at a temporary fruit stall next to the building.

On the fourth floor, clothes, wooden furniture and a false ceiling were damaged across an area of around 50 square feet. Aluminium and plastic decorative sheets on the exterior of the building were also affected.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control and completely extinguished it by 6:07 am following firefighting and rescue operations.

Cause of fire not disclosed

The Mumbai Fire Brigade has not yet provided details about what caused the fire.

The incident comes amid renewed concerns over fire safety in Mumbai buildings. Earlier this month, two people, including a toddler, were killed and six others injured after a major fire broke out in a residential building in Vile Parle West.

That fire was initially classified as Level-I before being escalated to Level-II. Eight fire tenders and specialised equipment were deployed during the response, according to officials.
