'Check Aadhaar Card, Apply Tilak': VHP Demands Ahead of Garba Events in Maharashtra

The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has announced a ban on Muslim participation in garba and dandiya events across Maharashtra ahead of the Navratri festival, urging organisers to verify the Hindu identity of all attendees.

With Navratri scheduled to begin on October 11, the right-wing organisation has issued a set of guidelines to event managers to enforce the restriction. The instructions require organisers to check the Aadhaar cards of participants at entry gates and apply a tilak to their foreheads.

Speaking on the move, VHP spokesperson Nair described the restrictions as "precautionary measures" rather than an initiative targeted at any specific group.

"The VHP, which is unwilling to compromise on its core agenda of religious conversion and anti-cow slaughter, believes festivals are an integral part of the cultural legacy of the Hindus. And it cannot allow its dilution," Nair said. He maintained that while the group is not against anybody, there was no reason to relax guidelines for those who do not subscribe to Hindu religious beliefs and worship styles.

Guidelines Issued Ahead of Navratri Festivities

Nair further suggested that if Muslims wish to participate in the festivities, they should bring their family members, wives, and sisters, or alternatively organise Navratri events within their own residences or mosques.

The VHP's directive comes a month ahead of the nine-day festival and follows recent calls by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat emphasizing the need for social and religious harmony across India and globally. However, the VHP maintained that its stance remained rooted in safeguarding Hindu cultural legacy and preventing its dilution during major public celebrations.
