Following the Maharashtra local body elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party  (BJP) is considering parting ways with the alliance with Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) due to its poor performance in recent local poll elections, according to reports.

The Mahayuti alliance recently concluded Maharashtra's local body elections with a massive win, securing 29 municipal corporations, in which the BJP won 19 corporations.

A total of 6,859 wards in the municipal corporation election,  MVA alliance won 3,089 seats, BJP won 1,425 seats, whereas Shinde's Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP won 399 and 167 seats respectively.

The poor performance of NCP can be measured with lost of  its strongholds of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, where Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar lost to BJP despite  an alliance.

These numbers of NCP in the polls have led BJP leaders to think about whether to continue the alliance with NCP or not,  noted the reports.

There is a section of the BJP in Maharashtra that is reportedly willing to part ways with the NCP due to the poor performance in the polls and Ajit Pawar’s alleged role in the irrigation scam.

Amidst all this, a startling possibility is also emerging that the BJP may consider bringing Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP) into the grand alliance to reduce its dependence on Shinde faction. Sharad Pawar's party has 8 MPs in the Lok Sabha. If the BJP gets his support, its dependence on Shinde will be significantly reduced, which could bring a new and major twist in Maharashtra politics.
