Mumbai’s Metro Line 3 ‘Aqua Line’ faced a major embarrassment just days after its inauguration, as flooding hit the underground Worli Metro Station following the first spell of monsoon rains late Sunday through Monday morning.

Visuals circulating on social media platform X showed water seeping from ceilings, pooling on platforms, and cascading down staircases at the Worli station, sparking public outrage and raising questions over the metro line’s construction quality and preparedness.

Congress MP and President of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee Prof Varsha Eknath Gaikwad also shared videos of the incident, slamming the Maharashtra government.

“The much-hyped underground Mumbai Metro 3 has been thrown open to the public, but the station platform is flooded, water can be seen leaking from the roof, and services have been suspended at Acharya Atre Chowk. Does the ‘Mahabrashth Yuti’ even care how dangerous a submerged underground metro is?” she questioned in her post.

She further demanded accountability, stating, “We don’t want hyped inaugurations, but basic safety and functionality.”

Metro responds

In response, the official Mumbai Metro Line 3 handle issued a statement on X saying:

“Due to an unforeseen technical issue, train services on Metro Line-3 are temporarily curtailed and will operate only up to Worli Station instead of Acharya Atre Chowk. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused.”

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Raigad, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. An orange alert remains in place for Thane and Palghar, while a yellow alert has been sounded for Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Satara, Pune, and Nashik.
