6 Dead, Several Trapped As Four-Storey Dangerous Building Collapses Near Mumbai

At least six people lost their lives and several others remain trapped under rubble after a portion of a four-storey residential structure collapsed in Maharashtra's Bhiwandi town late Thursday night. The tragedy struck the Kohinoor Building in the Balaji Nagar locality of the powerloom hub at around 11:30 PM, triggering a massive overnight search and rescue operation by emergency teams.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Thane Disaster Response Force, and the local Bhiwandi Fire Brigade rushed to the disaster site alongside heavy earth-moving machinery and sniffer dog units to clear concrete slabs and locate survivors.

Structure Had Been Declared Unsafe By Civic Body

The Kohinoor Building, which housed 48 rooms across four storeys, had previously been declared dangerous and structurally unsafe by the Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC). According to civic officials, repair work was underway at the premises when the catastrophic structural failure took place.

Local residents reported hearing loud cracking noises emanating from the structure at around 9:00 PM, hours before the crash. Recognizing the danger, neighbors immediately alerted occupants and managed to evacuate several families from the premises. However, as additional residents and laborers were attempting to clear out, B-wing of the residential complex suddenly gave way.

Overnight Rescue Effort Ongoing For Trapped Victims

Rescuers pulled out three bodies from beneath the heavy debris during overnight operations. One injured boy was successfully extricated from the wreckage and rushed to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment.

Emergency personnel estimate that between four to eight individuals remain trapped underneath the collapsed concrete sections. Search efforts are continuing through Friday morning as NDRF personnel use specialized cutters and heavy equipment to navigate the unstable site. Local authorities, including senior BNCMC representatives, remain stationed at Balaji Nagar to oversee the ongoing relief operations and facilitate medical aid for the injured.
