Morbi Well Water ‘Moves Like Waves’ for 4 Days, Collector Explains Mystery Behind Phenomenon

An unusual phenomenon at a well in Veerparda village of Gujarat’s Morbi district has drawn attention after the water reportedly began moving like sea waves for four consecutive days. Morbi Collector Swapnil Khare has ruled out any link to earthquake activity, attributing the movement to trapped air in the underground water-bearing layer following recent rainfall.

What Is Causing the Water Movement?

The well is around 18 feet deep and has been showing unusual movement on its surface. According to a preliminary assessment by a team of geologists, air may have become trapped in the aquifer because of the recent rainfall.

As groundwater levels change and the water begins to recede, the trapped air can move beneath the surface. Officials believe this movement is causing the water at the top of the well to rise and fall, creating what appears to be wave-like motion.

Collector Rules Out Earthquake Activity

The unusual movement had sparked speculation among local residents that it could be linked to an earthquake or underground seismic activity.

Collector Swapnil Khare said officials had checked with the authorities responsible for monitoring earthquakes in Gujarat and found no unusual seismic activity over the previous five to 10 days.

The preliminary assessment therefore points towards a local groundwater phenomenon rather than an earthquake-related event.

Groundwater Team to Conduct Further Checks

The district administration has also informed the Gujarat Ground Water Research Institute about the incident.

A specialised team is expected to visit the site in the coming days and conduct further examination to establish the exact cause of the unusual movement.

Why Only One Well?

Another unusual aspect of the incident is that other wells in the surrounding area reportedly remain calm, while the water in this particular well continues to move.

Videos of the phenomenon have circulated on social media, drawing curious residents to the site. The collector's clarification has helped dispel speculation about a possible earthquake, although further examination is expected to provide a more detailed explanation.
