A large-scale sound healing installation, described as the world’s largest sound healing dome, has been introduced at Tulah Clinical Wellness in Keralam, bringing together elements of architecture, acoustics and therapeutic sound practices.

Known as the Sonorium, the dome has been conceptualised as a space where sound is used as a modality to influence relaxation and physiological balance. The project is associated with composer A R Rahman, and developed in collaboration with Svaram, a unit in Auroville specialising in handmade musical instruments, sound installations, and sound therapy, along with JHALAA, a new raga based band mentored by Rahman.

The structure is designed with a seven-petal geometric layout, referencing traditional chakra systems, and incorporates a circular arrangement of tuned instruments based on ‘Just Intonation’, covering frequencies from 64 Hz to 1024 Hz. The installation also includes vibro-acoustic beds that transmit sound vibrations through the body, in addition to the ambient soundscape within the dome.

According to its developers, the Sonorium combines long-standing sound-based practices with contemporary approaches to nervous system regulation. The environment is intended to create conditions that may support reduced mental activity and induce states associated with relaxation.

Founder Faizal E Kottikollon stated that the idea for the project originated from a sound healing experience in Auroville, which later evolved into a dedicated architectural and acoustic concept after years of development with engineers and designers.

While sound therapy has been used across cultures historically, its clinical and scientific validation remains an area of ongoing study. The Sonorium represents a growing interest in integrating alternative wellness approaches with structured environments and modern acoustic design.

Sessions conducted within the dome are positioned as experiences that may influence stress levels, sleep quality and overall mental state, though outcomes can vary and are subject to individual response.
