Rupee downfall against dollar making US travel expensive for Indians
With the dollar exchange rates rising against the Indian Rupee, travelers from India to the US will now have to spend more on their trips.
Compared to last year, those planning vacations to the US will need to spend an additional ₹20,000 due to the increased exchange rate, as per industry sources.
As the dollar has now reached ₹86.67, the cost of US trips has significantly risen.
Usuallar, people start planning their summer vacations in January and February, and this year is no different. However, travel bookings and inquiries have already begun, with a noticeable increase of ₹20,000 in trip costs compared to last year.
Increase in travel costs for different destinations:
US: ₹15,000–₹20,000 more
European countries: ₹10,000–₹15,000 more
Dubai & Singapore: ₹5,000–₹7,000 more
Current travel package costs:
US: ₹3.50 lakh to ₹7 lakh
Europe: ₹3 lakh to ₹6 lakh
Dubai: ₹1 lakh to ₹1.25 lakh
Singapore: Around ₹1.25 lakh
Five years ago, in February 2020, the exchange rate of the rupee against the dollar was ₹71.51. Over the past five years, the rupee has depreciated by ₹15.16 against the dollar. Last year, on February 15, the exchange rate was ₹86.67.
With the falling value of the rupee, many wonder whether it will impact the number of Indian tourists traveling abroad. Manish Sharma, Chairman of the Tourism Development Society, stated, “Despite the increase in travel package prices compared to last year, the number of travelers from Gujarat heading abroad is unlikely to decline significantly.”
Due to frequent fluctuations in the dollar exchange rate, tour operators have now started calculating travel package costs based on the exchange rate at the time of full payment.
