Paris Fashion Week: From Gaurav Gupta’s tragedy-inspired collections to escapism

On Wednesday, designer Gaurav Gupta unveiled his Spring 2025 Couture collection ‘Across the Flame’, at Paris Fashion Week 2025. This collection is inspired by the journey he shares with his wife, Navkirat Sodhi, following a traumatic fire accident.

Navkirat, who is both Gupta’s muse and a poet, opened the show with a powerful recital, wearing an ivory-draped corset gown that proudly displayed her burn scars.

According to Gupta, the latest collection is a testament to “strength found in vulnerability and the light that emerges from the darkest flames.”

Ahead of the Paris Fashion Week 2024 a severe fire had destroyed his Delhi atelier and injured his wife. She suffered 55% burns in the accident and spent two and a half months in intensive care, facing only a 50% chance of survival.

In a recent social media post, the designer reflected, “One of the most life-changing experiences happened to us about 8 months ago. We were involved in a fire accident. She is a fighter and a survivor; she is a goddess.”

With this collection, Gupta expresses the power of fire through the form of metal and drapery. He also tried to showcase his wife’s healing journey after the accident with the colours showing the shades of burns and bruises, going from black to dark purple, from dark purple to blue.

The Paris Fashion Week also showcased some unforgettable collections that explored themes of escapism and nostalgia, drawing inspiration from the past centuries. Retro-draped skirts and coats inspired by Yves Saint Laurent’s designs in the 1950s were the highlights at Dior’s show, while at Schiaparelli, Daniel Roseberry created a collection inspired by vintage ribbons from the 1920s and 30s.
