A ‘Made in China’ facekini is going viral online and making waves in the beauty and swimwear industry. Would you wear one while swimming? In China, women are embracing facekinis to protect their skin from sun damage. But could this trend catch on in India?
The popularity of the facekini UV protection swimwear for your face and head has grown 50% over the last year in China, becoming an $11 billion industry.
The facekini, designed as protective swimwear, shields the face from UV rays and chlorine. Despite giving wearers a look reminiscent of robbers, its purpose isn’t concealment, it’s protection.
The design covers the entire head and face, with holes for the eyes and nose to see and breathe. It offers a barrier against sun exposure, heat waves, and the harsh effects of beach swimming.
The internet is divided. Some praise the concept as innovative, while others call it cringe or scary. Some social media users raised concerns, warning that it may be “made of toxic chemicals absorbing directly into the skin”. Others joked, “Why even go outside at that point?” Meanwhile, many have embraced it, saying, “I love this because I don’t use sunscreen, this is perfect!”
