Amid the celebrations of Dhanteras, Diwali, and the Gujarati New Year, as well as the wedding season around the corner, understanding how to verify the purity of gold jewellery is crucial.
To help customers ensure the authenticity of gold, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has an application to track all ISI and hallmark-certified gold and silver jewellery.
BIS care app
An application launched by BIS, the national standards body of India, which operates under the union ministry of consumer affairs, is available to download both on Android and iOS devices.
This app enables consumers to check the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number, which is given to every piece of jewellery at the time of hallmarking and is unique for every piece of jewellery. It also enables you to verify the licence number, and product registration number, and register a complaint regarding a gold purchase.
According to the BIS website, consumers can verify the authenticity of the HUID on hallmarked gold jewellery by clicking on “Verify HUID icon on the BIS Care app.” Consumers can get their hallmarked jewellery tested at any of the BIS recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) after paying testing charges of ₹200.
Kamlesh Shah, a gold businessman, said, “The gold jewellery is now sold with HUID registration. The amount of gold, silver, and other metals used in jewellery, the name of the gold worker, and other details are registered.”
He said, “This app will stop businessmen from cheating people. However, many customers still don’t know about this app."
Presently, hallmarking in gold jewellery comprises three markings, namely the BIS hallmark, purity of gold in carats (14 carats, 18 carats, 20 carats, 22 carats, 23 carats, and 24 carats), and a 6-digit alphanumeric HUID code.
As per the government of India, the ministry of consumer affairs ordered that only HUID-hallmarked jewellery will be sold by the BIS registered jewellers from Apr 2023.
