EU chief makes fashion statement in Anamika Khanna bandhgala at India-EU summit

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made a striking sartorial statement during the 16th India-EU summit by embracing Indian fashion in a vivid blue bandhgala designed by Anamika Khanna.
At Hyderabad house on January 27, the summit saw von der Leyen step out in an electric blue bandhgala jacket featuring intricate resham embroidery and delicate, tone-on-tone 3D floral motifs. She paired the structured jacket with ivory trousers, creating an elegant blend of modern tailoring and traditional Indian craftsmanship. The ensemble stood out with its bold colour and refined detailing, perfectly complementing the ceremonial tone of the high-level diplomatic meeting.
The outfit was worn during her visit to Raj Ghat and later at the India-EU summit, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi, European Council President Antonio Costa, and Ursula von der Leyen announced a landmark fair trade agreement between India and the European Union. While the summit marked a significant political milestone, von der Leyen’s attire drew equal attention for symbolically highlighting cultural respect and collaboration.
Continuing her fashion-forward tribute to India, the EU chief also showcased traditional Indian attire at the Republic Day celebrations. For the parade, she chose a brocade Banarasi bandhgala designed by Rajesh Pratap Singh, paying homage to the master weavers of Varanasi and India’s rich textile heritage.
Known globally for her sharply tailored pantsuits, von der Leyen’s decision to don Indian designers during her visit marked a notable departure from her usual style. Her wardrobe choices were widely seen as a gesture of appreciation for Indian culture, reinforcing the spirit of partnership and mutual respect between India and the European Union.
