5 simple ways to adopt a sustainable lifestyle: Go zero waste
Adopt these easy hacks to go zero waste and promote sustainable future
Adopting a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle isn't easy. Choosing sustainability over convenience is tough, but it’s possible to do so without breaking the bank. Here are five budget-friendly tips to make your life easier and more eco-friendly.
1. Carry steel water bottles and utensils everywhere!
Yes! Even if you want to have panipuri, carry your own small steel bowl and wash it there only. Don’t use disposable paper and plastic cups; instead, reuse them in a smart way by keeping steel utensils in your bag! Carry a steel, copper, or ‘mitti’ (made from clay) water bottle everywhere and ditch the plastic! Politely decline those straws too.
2. Upcycle your outfits
If you have an outfit that no longer serves your needs, do not trash it. Make a quick buck by selling it on e-commerce platforms that sell ‘preloved items’ or if it is in a really poor condition, just turn it into a good ol’ waste cloth. Run a quick DIY video and you can also turn it into a bag that can be carried while shopping.
3. Chemical-free shampoo
Almost every shampoo contains one of the most notorious and harmful chemicals: sulphates. It is harmful to both the scalp and the environment. Interestingly, the origin of shampoo can be traced back to India. Back in the day, Indians mixed different herbs, in boiling water and added dried Indian gooseberry (amla), and soapnut (reetha) which would work as shampoo. It still is the most sustainable and healthier way to wash hair.
4. Home-made dishwasher and detergent
Detergents and dishwashing soaps contain phosphate, which can react with water. The nitrogen in these detergents reacts with the phosphorus in the water, creating nutrients that stimulate the growth of algae in freshwater. Instead of that, there is an easy way to make home-made detergent with four simple ingredients:
Pressure cook leftover or spoiled lemons, grind them, add rock salt, and add citrus bio-enzyme or white vinegar. This is the easiest way to make non-toxic, natural detergent.
5. Zero-waste bathing powder
Instead of buying expensive bathing products, make bathing powder at home without any chemicals. Grind green moong lentils, rice, red lentils, and wild turmeric, and add gram flour, sandalwood powder, neem powder, tulsi and amla powder to it. Finally, you can mix all of them with rose water and use them daily!
Adopt these easy hacks to pursue an extraordinary lifestyle of going zero waste and promoting the progressive idea of a sustainable future.
