18 Camels Die in Kutch After Eating Poisonous Lantana Plant

The mystery surrounding the deaths of 18 camels in Rajda village of Mandvi in Kutch has been solved, with post-mortem examinations confirming that the animals died after consuming the poisonous Lantana plant.

The camels had been taken out for grazing by livestock herders amid a shortage of rainfall in Kutch and parts of Saurashtra. All 18 animals subsequently fell ill and died under suspicious circumstances, prompting authorities to conduct post-mortem examinations to determine the cause of death.

The reports revealed that the camels had consumed Lantana, a highly toxic plant, while grazing. The animals reportedly developed health complications after ingesting the plant and subsequently died.

The deaths of 18 camels at the same time have left livestock owners concerned, particularly amid inadequate rainfall in several areas. The presence of poisonous vegetation has added to concerns among animal herders.

What is Lantana?

Lantana is considered a highly invasive and poisonous plant. In Gujarat, it is commonly known by names including Gandhari, Gandhati Phulkakari and Rai Muniya. While its colourful flowers make the plant visually attractive, it can pose serious risks to livestock and the environment.
