What happened?
According to information available, the victim’s family from Modaj village in Kheda district had travelled to Girnar on July 11, 2026. Early in the morning, while the family was climbing the steps leading up the mountain, a lion suddenly attacked 12-year-old Mayursingh and dragged him into the forest.
After an extensive search operation, only the boy’s clothes and some bodily remains were recovered from the forest. Following the incident, officials from the Forest Department and the police rushed to the spot and initiated further action.
According to the boy’s uncle, Anilkumarsinh Chauhan, the family had climbed around 50 steps from Girnar’s main entrance when the attack occurred.
“Suddenly, a lion emerged from the darkness and pounced on my nephew from behind. The animal snatched the child from my hands and disappeared into the forest within seconds,” he said.
Following frantic searches in the area, family members and officials recovered the child’s shoes, blood-stained clothes and some remains.
In the wake of the incident, authorities temporarily suspended public movement on the main staircase leading up Girnar as a precautionary measure.
