Jamnagar Farmers Launch Indefinite Hunger Strike Over Power Transmission Line In Jodiya

Seven farmers, including Vavdi village sarpanch Bhaveshbhai, have begun an indefinite hunger strike in Gujarat’s Jamnagar district, opposing the installation of electricity poles for a power transmission line in the village.

The protest began on August 20 at a ‘Kisan Satyagraha Camp’ near the Shri Ramdevpirji Maharaj Temple in Vavdi village of Jodiya taluka. Farmers from neighbouring villages have also joined the agitation in support of the protesters.

Farmers from nearby villages join protest

Support for the agitation has come from farmers in Limbuda, Anada, Bhadra, Keshiya and Rampar. A large number of villagers, including women and farmers, gathered at the protest site.

Before the hunger strike began, the seven protesters were honoured at the village Ram Temple. A procession accompanied by drums and traditional music was then taken out to the protest camp.

Protesters vow to continue hunger strike

Vavdi sarpanch Bhaveshbhai said the seven protesters would survive only on water during the hunger strike.

“Seven of us are sitting at the camp and have started a hunger strike from today. We will survive only on water. Until the companies and the authorities give us a concrete decision, we will not leave this camp or go anywhere,” he said.

Farmers seek concrete decision on power line

The farmers are seeking a resolution to their objections over the proposed power transmission line and the installation of electricity poles in the area.

They have said the agitation will continue until the authorities and the concerned power companies provide a concrete decision on their demands.

The protest has drawn support from surrounding villages, with farmers and local residents continuing to gather at the camp.
