In a recent TV interview with US media, US President Donald Trump said he plans to impose equal tariffs on India in response to the high duties the country places on American imports.

Recalling the conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the recent meeting, Trump said, “Whatever you charge, I’m charging the same.” He claimed Modi was unhappy with this approach, but insisted it was fair.

India is known for imposing steep tariffs on certain US goods, particularly in the automobile sector, where duties on foreign cars can reach up to 100%. Sitting alongside Trump, Elon Musk confirmed this, saying, “Auto imports are taxed at 100%.”

Trump argued that these high tariffs make it difficult for American businesses to sell in India unless they set up manufacturing plants there—something he sees as unfair to the US economy. Under his proposed policy, the US would mirror India’s tariff rates on imports.

“If I said 25%, people would complain. So now I just say, ‘Whatever they charge, we’ll charge,’” Trump stated in an interview. “And you know what? They stop.”
