The United States Mint will produce a 24-carat gold coin featuring the face of Donald Trump on one side and a bald eagle on the other. The unusual move has drawn criticism, as a living president rarely features on such a special coin.

The coin, to be minted to celebrate 250 years of American Independence, has stirred controversy after it was approved by the United States Commission of Fine Arts (CFA).

The coin will feature Trump’s well-known image with his fists on the table, with ‘Liberty’ written above his head, and the years 1776 and 2026 written on either side of his head.

Moreover, the coin will feature the tagline ‘In God We Trust’ at the bottom, according to a release titled ‘Semiquincentennial Gold Coin Candidate Designs’ by the CFA and the US Treasury.

On the other side of the coin, a bald eagle—the national bird—will appear, with ‘United States of America’ arching above it. The Latin text ‘E Pluribus Unum’ appears on the reverse, which translates to ‘Out of many, one’, denoting the unity of the nation.

The design, approved by the CFA, is under scrutiny as the members of the panel were appointed by Trump himself.

According to the CFA website, it is composed of seven members with expertise in the arts. Appointed by the President, Commission members serve four-year terms without compensation. The chairman and vice-chairman are elected by the members.

In January 2026, Trump appointed Mary Anne Carter, Rodney Mims Cook Jr, Chamberlain Harris, Roger Kimball, James C McCrery II, Pamela Hughes Patenaude, and Matthew Taylor to serve four-year terms.
