US President Donald Trump’s administration has introduced a pilot project where applicants have to pay an additional fee of $750 for B-1 and B-2 visas to secure an interview appointment within 10 days. After claiming the fee, it will reduce the backlog time which earlier takes a year.

Amid a setback to the Trump administration over H-1B visa policies as the court struck down the $1,00,000 fees, the US State Department has introduced a new pilot programme for B-1 and B-2 visas.

Under the program, eligible applicants for B-1 and B-2 visas would be required to pay an additional fee of $750, after paying the existing $185 visa application fee. In return, applicants would be able to secure an interview appointment within 10 days at a US embassy or consulate abroad and complete the required consular procedures more quickly.

The US B-1/B-2 visa is a nonimmigrant visa that permits temporary travel for business (B-1) and tourism or medical treatment (B-2).

The initiative is aimed at reducing the visa backlog, which in many cases has resulted in applicants waiting for more than a year to secure an interview appointment.

According to the State Department, the pilot programme is expected to begin in July and continue through December 2026. During the six-month period, officials will assess demand for interview appointments and evaluate the programme's operational impact. Based on the findings, a decision will be made on whether to make the initiative permanent or not.

The department also noted that if applicants cancel the process then additional fee will not be refundable.

It is believed that the initiative could prove particularly beneficial for the US as it prepares to host major global events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, which are expected to drive a significant increase in international travel demand.
