US court combines three cases against Gautam Adani, others into joint trial
A New York court has reportedly combined the three ongoing cases against Adani Group chairperson Gautam Adani, who had been indicted in a bribery case in November last year.
The Eastern District of New York court on November 20, 2024, had charged the conglomerate tycoon Gautam Adani and seven others with multiple counts of fraud and lying to US-based investors about the scheme.
Senior executives of an Indian renewable energy company, an American company, and a Canadian investor were involved in a bribery scheme of $265 million (~₹2,272 crore), according to the indictment.
They allegedly bribed Indian government officials to secure solar energy supply contracts and misrepresented their anti-bribery practices to investors. As per the court document, they also obstructed a US government investigation into the scheme.
The decision to combine the three cases – criminal case, civil case involving Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Adani, and the other civil case involving SEC and the other accused.
The decision was made by the court as these cases come from similar transactions and allegations, suggested the reports.
The decision, as per reports, was taken to avoid conflicting schedules and conduct the trial with efficiency. The trial will be heard reportedly by District Judge Nicholas G Garaufis.
The Adani Group has denied the allegations, terming them ‘baseless’.
