The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are reportedly reviewing a proposal to create a reality television show where immigrants compete for US citizenship, as per reports. The concept has sparked debate around the world including in India, where thousands of aspiring migrants look to the US for education, work, and a pathway to citizenship.

The show’s format, pitched by Canadian-born television producer Rob Worsoff, would reportedly feature contestants taking part in challenges themed around American history, innovation, and culture.

One idea floated includes a NASA-inspired space challenge, where participants build and launch rockets, while other segments are set in symbolic American backdrops like Ellis Island, San Francisco’s Gold Rush era, and Detroit’s auto industry.

The series would conclude with one immigrant being granted US citizenship in a televised swearing-in ceremony. The proposal, though not yet approved, has already drawn both interest and criticism.

Immigration Games: A new genre of reality TV?

While reality television has long explored themes of survival, talent, and romance, this proposal marks a potential shift into “immigration-based competition entertainment.” It’s an unprecedented idea that could blur the lines between governance and game show theatrics.

Department spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told US media outlets that such proposals are reviewed regularly and that this one has neither been approved nor rejected.
