Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Kyiv and Washington have reached an agreement on a minerals partnership, paving the way for future collaboration on Ukraine’s vast natural resources. The deal establishes a fund where Ukraine will contribute 50% of proceeds from the monetisation of state-owned mineral resources, including oil, gas, and logistics infrastructure.

While the agreement does not include concrete security guarantees, Zelensky emphasised that these will be addressed in future negotiations. He reiterated that Ukraine’s security is key to ensuring lasting peace. Initially, Zelensky rejected the deal due to the absence of security assurances, leading to pressure from the Trump administration.

Alongside the minerals agreement, US and Ukrainian teams are preparing for high-level negotiations on Friday, where Zelensky is set to meet former US President Donald Trump. The discussions will focus on continued US support, security guarantees, and economic cooperation.

Zelensky stressed the importance of maintaining US aid, stating, “Strength is essential on the path to peace.” The White House, meanwhile, has positioned the agreement as a way for the US to “recoup” its financial aid to Ukraine while providing continued military assistance.

With negotiations set for Friday, the meeting is expected to shape the next phase of US-Ukraine relations amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
