UK airports hit by flight delays due to ‘technical issues’

The flights in and out of the UK were delayed after the country’s air traffic control systems faced a ‘technical issue’.

The air traffic flow restrictions caused many delays in the inbound and departing flights, with the European air control agency, Eurocontrol reporting delay time of 1,36,515 minutes. It is important to note that these are European numbers, including those for the UK.

Statement from the air traffic control

Today at 12.10 UK time (17.40 IST), the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) provided an update, “We are currently experiencing a technical issue and have applied traffic flow restrictions to maintain safety.”

Moreover, NATS also updated that “engineers are working to find and fix the fault.”

Consumers were advised to check with the airline

Apologising for the inconvenience and the delays, the air traffic services advised the consumers to ‘check with their airline on the status of your flight’.

NATS also updated the notice on 12.40 UK time (18.10 IST), saying that the agency is ‘continuing to work hard to resolve the technical issue’.

The same notification also clarified that the UK airspace was not closed for the aircraft, but the air traffic flow restrictions were applied just to maintain safety while the technical issues were causing delays.

Air traffic high due to bank holiday?

In Britain, the last Monday of August is a bank holiday. Since this provides for a long weekend, the passenger flow to and out of the UK may be higher than usual, adding to the difficulties caused by the technical glitch in the air traffic control.
