Tutor-turned-suspect: Who is White House event shooter Cole Allen

The US authorities have reportedly identified the suspect arrested in connection with a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC, as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen.
Allen, a tutor and software developer from Torrance, allegedly opened fire at the venue on Saturday, triggering panic and the evacuation of attendees, including US President Donald Trump.
According to investigators, the suspect reportedly attempted to breach security at the Washington Hilton hotel before being subdued by the US Secret Service. An officer was shot at close range but survived due to body armour, officials said.
Trump reportedly later told reporters that the suspect was carrying multiple weapons and is currently in custody. He is expected to be formally charged on Monday.
As per reports, Allen holds a degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, obtained in 2017. He is also reported to have completed a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 2025.
Officials said Allen had worked as a tutor with a private education firm and was also involved in independent game development projects. He had previously served as a teaching assistant and briefly worked as a mechanical engineer.
Investigators are examining his background and possible motive, including his past activities and affiliations.
The high-profile event was attended by several senior leaders, including First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance, along with cabinet members and media representatives.
