US President Donald Trump is reportedly preparing to make a major cut to tariffs on Chinese imports, potentially slashing them from 145% to around 50% as part of a strategic move ahead of upcoming trade negotiations in Switzerland.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the proposed tariff reduction is intended to ease tensions and build momentum for what are expected to be complex and extended talks between US and Chinese officials. The adjustment, which could take effect as early as next week, is seen as a temporary but significant step to break a deadlock that has hampered global supply chains.

“This is about creating a workable environment for negotiation,” one source said, adding that tariff cuts may also extend to certain South Asian nations, with rates potentially falling to around 25%.

Trump had previously imposed the 145% tariff in a sharp escalation of his trade stance against Beijing, but then he had signaled a willingness to revise those measures if it helps secure a broader trade agreement.
