Trump stands firm on reciprocal tariffs, calls Apr 2 ‘Liberation Day’
US President Donald Trump has pledged a firm yet fair approach toward trading partners, including India, as he is set to unveil new reciprocal tariffs on April 2.
The White House has made a significant statement, claiming that India has imposed a 100% tariff on US agricultural products, and now it's time to reciprocate, as per reports.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt highlighted several unfair trade practices, pointing out that the EU charges a 5% tariff on American dairy products, Japan imposes a 700% tariff on US rice, Canada nearly 300% on American butter and cheese, and India imposes a 100% tariff on American agricultural goods, which hampers US exports.
According to the administration, these tariffs have made it nearly impossible for US goods to be exported to these markets.
President Donald Trump discussed how these tariffs have harmed American businesses and workers. Trump intends to introduce reciprocal tariffs on April 2, referring to the initiative as "Liberation Day" for the US.
Earlier this month, Trump stated that the current tariffs were temporary and minor. However, the new set of reciprocal tariffs, set to take effect on April 2, could be a game-changer.
