Trump slams China with 145% tariffs as trade war heats up

US President Donald Trump has significantly increased tariffs on Chinese imports, raising the total levy to 145%, according to a White House announcement. This move adds to earlier tariffs, including a 20% duty introduced earlier this year, as per the reports.
On Wednesday, Trump announced a new 125% tariff on Chinese goods. Later, the White House clarified that this was in addition to the 20% already in place, bringing the total rate to 145% on most Chinese products.
At a cabinet meeting, President Trump said the US economy is strong and emphasised that the tariffs are meant to push for fairer treatment of the United States globally. “We’re very happy with the way the country’s running,” Trump said.
Following the announcement, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned China against retaliating. He described the decision as a strategic move to isolate China and encourage global cooperation with the US.
In response, China has imposed 84% tariffs on American goods. At the same time, Chinese officials are working to strengthen economic ties with Europe and Asian countries to reduce the impact of the US pressure. However, reports suggest that China’s efforts to form a broader alliance have so far seen mixed results, as many countries remain cautious.
While the Trump administration has paused new tariffs on dozens of other countries for 90 days, it has doubled down on pressure against Beijing, raising concerns about continued volatility in global markets.
