Trump reignites controversy, urges Canada to become 51st US state

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump once again suggested that Canada should become part of the United States as its 51st state.
Trump took to his Truth Social media handle, stating that the US has subsidised Canada extensively. He claimed that without this massive subsidy, Canada would “cease to exist as a country”.
He added, “We don’t need anything they have."
Trump further mentioned that Canada should become part of the US, calling it a ‘cherished’ 51st state. He argued that if Canada joined the US, citizens would enjoy lower taxes, better military protection, and no tariffs.
The statement comes after the announcement of a tariff hike on Canada, Mexico, and China.
The Trump administration has levied an additional tariff hike of 25% on imports from Canada and Mexico and 10% on imports from China.
However, oil imports from Canada will be subject to a lower levy of 10%.
The White House said in a factsheet detailing and explaining the tariff hikes. “President Trump is taking bold action to hold Mexico, Canada, and China accountable to their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into our country,” it added.
