Trump pushes sanctions on India, says efforts aimed at ending Ukraine war: Reports

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reportedly said that US President Donald Trump has undertaken several measures, including secondary tariffs on India, as part of his strategy to bring the Ukraine war to an end.

According to reports, Leavitt told the media that Trump has been applying tremendous public pressure to accelerate peace efforts. She reportedly added that the President has imposed sanctions on India and other nations, insisting that he is not in favor of delaying negotiations.

This reiteration comes after a senior US official claimed that India made huge profits from the resale of Russian oil during the conflict. Trump reportedly suggested that his sanctions on New Delhi may have influenced Russian President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to meet him.

On Tuesday, Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyyat the White House. Reports said the talks were described as positive, with Zelenskyycalling it his best conversation yet with the US President. Trump also signaled openness to a trilateral meeting with Putin to explore a negotiated settlement.

Meanwhile, US official Bessent reportedly pointed out that India’s imports of Russian oil rose from less than 1% before the war to about 42%. He alleged that India had earned around $16 billion in additional profits by reselling crude, benefitting some of the country’s richest families.
