US President Donald Trump is expected to deploy hundreds of National Guard troops in Washington, DC. Officials have indicated that the final number of personnel and the specific roles they will undertake are still under consideration, as per reports.

One official, speaking on condition of anonymity, reportedly stated that while the exact duties are yet to be determined, the troops could assist in protecting federal agents or perform administrative work to allow law enforcement officers to focus on other tasks.

The possible deployment follows Trump’s earlier use of the California National Guard in June to support immigration enforcement efforts in Los Angeles, despite the unit being under the control of the state’s governor.

Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser noted on Sunday that it is within the President’s authority to mobilise the DC National Guard, which operates under his direct control.
