Trump gives Russia 50-day deadline to end Ukraine war, warns of 100% tariffs and sanctions

Donald Trump has reportedly given Russia a 50-day deadline to broker a peace deal with Ukraine, warning that the United States could impose a 100% tariff on Russian exports and enforce sanctions on countries buying Russian oil if hostilities do not cease, as per reports.
The move, which reportedly led to a recovery in the rouble and gains in Russian stock markets, was seen by investors as a temporary reprieve due to the grace period provided by Trump.
During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House on Monday, Trump reportedly said the US would proceed with severe tariffs, around 100%, if a deal is not reached within 50 days, and indicated these would come in the form of secondary tariffs, without sharing further details.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reportedly clarified that both sanctions and tariffs remained on the table, describing them as tools available to the administration.
The White House official reportedly said Russia could face both measures if it fails to sign a ceasefire agreement by early September, which would mark a significant shift in Western sanctions policy if enforced.
