Trump deploys 800 National Guards in Washington DC, takes control of capital

Following his declaration of a criminal emergency in Washington, DC, President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of approximately 800 National Guard personnel to the nation’s capital, according to reports.
The move, announced Tuesday, also places the city’s police department under federal control for an initial period of up to 30 days, as permitted by law.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the duration of this federal oversight could be extended after a review by authorities. Any continuation beyond the 30-day limit would require congressional approval, a prospect likely to face strong opposition from Democrats.
According to Leavitt, 23 individuals were arrested overnight on charges ranging from homicide and drunk driving to weapons and narcotics offenses, as well as fare evasion on public transit. Additionally, the US Park Police have cleared 70 homeless encampments over the past five months. Residents of these encampments have been given the option to relocate to shelters or enter drug rehabilitation programme, though those who refuse may face fines or jail time.
