Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has agreed to a partial ceasefire in the ongoing war with Russia, a decision that followed discussions between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the White House.

In a phone call on Wednesday, Trump briefed Zelensky about his recent conversation with Putin, where the two leaders agreed on a limited ceasefire targeting the energy and infrastructure sectors. Karoline Leavitt, a White House spokesperson, revealed that technical teams from the involved nations would meet in Saudi Arabia in the coming days to discuss expanding the ceasefire to the Black Sea, which could eventually pave the way for a full ceasefire.

While President Trump had initially proposed a 30-day ceasefire, Zelensky accepted a more focused agreement concerning only energy and infrastructure, marking a significant step toward de-escalating the conflict, according to the White House. Leavitt described the call between Trump and Zelensky as “fantastic,” noting that the two leaders discussed various aspects of the war, including the situation in Kursk, and agreed to share intelligence between their defense teams as the battlefield situation evolved.

Zelensky also requested additional air defense systems, particularly Patriot missile systems, to protect Ukrainian civilians. Trump pledged to work with Zelensky to secure available defense support, especially from European allies.

The Ukrainian leader expressed his gratitude for Trump’s leadership in the efforts to address the ongoing conflict and reiterated his willingness to pursue a full ceasefire. Trump further discussed the security of Ukraine’s electrical supply and nuclear power plants, suggesting that the United States could assist in managing these facilities with its expertise, proposing American ownership of the plants as the best way to protect critical infrastructure.
