Trump administration cuts 2,000 USAID jobs, places more on leave

President Donald Trump’s administration has announced a major restructuring of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), resulting in the elimination of 2,000 positions. In addition, many remaining employees have been placed on administrative leave globally.

This decision comes after a federal court ruling allowed the administration to move forward with reducing USAID staff both in the United States and abroad. As per reports, US District Judge Carl Nichols rejected a lawsuit filed by USAID employees that sought to delay the government’s workforce reduction plan. According to official notices reviewed by an American news agency, employees not involved in mission-critical functions or leadership roles will be placed on administrative leave starting Sunday.

President Trump, along with Elon Musk, has been vocal about eliminating what they consider excessive foreign aid expenditures.

Reports indicate that, alongside the job cuts, hundreds of USAID contractors received anonymous termination letters over the weekend. The lack of detailed information in these letters has raised concerns about affected workers’ ability to claim unemployment benefits.

Meanwhile, a separate federal lawsuit has challenged the administration’s decision to freeze foreign aid funding. A different judge has issued a temporary order blocking the suspension of funds, requiring the government to restore a portion of the aid.
