An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck Tibet early Monday morning, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at a depth of 10 km, increasing the likelihood of aftershocks.

The NCS posted on X, stating:

 "Earthquake of M: 5.7, Date: 12/05/2025, Time: 02:41:24 IST, Latitude: 29.02 N, Longitude: 87.48 E, Depth: 10 km, Location: Tibet."

As of now, no injuries or damages have been reported.

This quake follows a smaller magnitude 3.7 tremor that occurred in the region on May 8. Surface-level earthquakes, such as the recent one, pose a greater risk than deeper ones because they release more energy closer to the Earth's surface. This can result in more intense ground shaking, increasing the potential for damage and casualties.

The Tibetan Plateau is prone to frequent seismic activity due to its tectonic location, making it one of the most earthquake-sensitive zones in the region.
