The Switzerland embassy located in New Delhi announced today that it will suspend Schengen visa applications from Indians. This order will remain in existence until Oct this year. As per the embassy, this decision is being taken keeping in mind the inflow of applications they are receiving being excessive against the shortage of their staff.

The Schengen visa allows a virtually borderless travel visa for the holder to any of the 26 member countries. The visa holder can have the freedom to travel within the member countries for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days.

Staff shortages resulting in visa processing delays

The Swiss embassy in Delhi has stated that it will suspend visa applications for Indians until Oct this year. The primary reason cited for this issue was the working capacity of the Swiss embassy, as they are running short on staff, state sources.

This has also resulted in disappointment among tour operators. According to a report, tour operators make significant profits from group tours across Europe. However, some reports have mentioned that group appointments have not been suspended by the embassy.

Chinese travellers affected as well

The staff shortage at Swiss embassies has also caused hindrances for Chinese travellers applying for the Schengen visa. COVID-19 is also considered one of the factors impacting the embassies handling of the surge in visa applications.
