Sunita Williams possibly to stay in space till Feb 2025

Updated: Aug 9th, 2024

In a media interaction on Aug 8, an official of the US space agency, NASA, said it has weighed-in on many options to bring back the stuck astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS), including Indian-origin Sunita Williams.

One of those would ensure the return of the two astronauts to Earth in 2025. And this plan involves Boeing’s rival Elon musk SpaceX, as per the reports.

NASA is facing a critical decision regarding the safe return of astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore from the ISS.

The duo, launched into space in June aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, have seen their mission extended due to a series of propulsion system malfunctions.

Originally planned as an eight-day mission, the astronauts’ stay has stretched into months as engineers grapple with persistent issues, including thruster failures and helium leaks.

Recent inspections have revealed that overheating thrusters have caused damage to critical seals, compromising the spacecraft's ability to safely return to Earth.

Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams, who docked at the International Space Station (ISS) in style on board the Boeing Starliner spacecraft on June 7, currently faces biological adversity at the orbital laboratory, according to reports.
